Heritance Tea Factory

Surrounded by hills and tea plantations, the town of Nuwara Eliya is the perfect getaway from Sri Lanka’s tropical heat. A hotel of character and star-class, set in an emerald teascape 6,800 feet above sea level, only six degrees from the Equator. In the mountain range, which gave the world Pure Ceylon Tea, the hotel began as a factory built in the days of the British Raj. It has been converted so that much of the original style and machinery remains, a reminder of the past in perfect blend with innovations of the present.

The withering lofts have been transformed into 57 bedrooms of cosy, carpeted comfort. Wood is the main material used, with doors, shelves and cupboards (plenty of them) left in their natural colours. The windows remain as they were in their original square wooden frames and these provide a glorious view from any bedroom or bathroom. Each bathroom has a bathtub and shower. Every bedroom is heated and has a built-in dressing table with wrap around mirrors, and beds designed for a perfect night’s sleep.

KENMARE RESTAURANT

Once the sifting room of the old tea factory, the Kenmare Restaurant, Nuwara Eliya now lays out lavish spreads of local and international cuisine. Enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets at leisure, or let the extensive a la carte menu tempts you. While the views are exceptional, the ambience itself may captivate you. The original girders and ironwork are all left unchanged, and rows of distinctive tea crates of old form the serving stations. Candle light and live music at night certainly add to its charm.

DINING ON WHEELS

No ordinary fine dining experience, nothing quite matches ‘Dining on Wheels’ – our Railway Carriage Restaurant. Nuwara Eliya once boasted a narrow-gauge railway – the Udupussellawa line, vital for transporting tea, which was discontinued mid last century. However, carriage TCK 6685 returns to its glory days: polished teak and brass fittings gleam in the candle light; white gloved butlers wait quietly in attendance. The Executive Chef himself will welcome you and take your order. The menu is equally impressive, as is the wine list. A nostalgic culinary journey of ‘six stations’ awaits a ride. Do book in advance though.

Heritance Tea Factory is hardly a noisy scrum of activity, but if the weather closes in or you want an even quieter retreat, try our cozy Library, perched above the Hethersett Bar.

Here you can settle in a cane chair to catch up with events in the daily paper. If you fancy some light holiday reading, there are shelves of bestsellers and a selection of magazines left by previous visitors; or you could devote some serious study to the history of Sri Lankan railways or local bird life!

OUR GYM

As a hotel resident you have free access to our gym next to the spa in the basement. The gym contains two treadmills, two cycling machines, a step machine, a rowing machine and a selection of free weights.

There are also showers and a changing room.
